Dottie's Diner at Phillips
A national treasure…in Woodbury?
Rightfully so, Dottie’s Diner At Phillips has been recognized by Michael Stern through Roadfood.com and also by Yankee Magazine. A notable post from Michael Stern taken from the Roadfood.com website states, “As for the donuts, which we have long maintained are among the nation's best – if not THE best – they are, if possible, better than ever. Cinnamon donuts are creamy inside with a wickedly crunchy exterior; chocolate donuts come loaded with vast amounts of the glossy dark glaze that so perfectly complements the cake within.” Dottie’s Diner At Phillips has also been showcased in Yankee Magazine in 2009 stating that “This diner has the best chicken pie you've ever tasted. The recipe is simple and traditional: a light, savory crust filled with both white and dark meat plus gravy, with peas and carrots either on the side or packed into the crust.”
Dottie’s Diner At Phillips was purchased by Dorrie and Ken Sperry in July 2006 from the Phillips family. It was renovated and opened as Dottie’s Diner At Phillips in August 2006. The name honors the Phillips family who operated the restaurant for 80 years. The catchy name is also a way to communicate to the community that “certain things stay the same like the donuts along with improvements,” Dorrie Sperry emphatically states.
As you walk in Dottie’s Diner At Phillips your eyes are drawn to the retro 1950s interior décor with turquoise accents, black and white checkered flooring and old fashioned school house lights. In case you don’t have time to sit for a meal, there is a self-serve coffee bar and of course you can take out an assortment of Dottie’s Diner at Phillips’ one-of-a-kind freshly baked donuts. Pies, including seasonal varieties, are also available for your enjoyment at home or as the perfect touch for your holiday meal. Depending on your preference you can enjoy a delicious meal seated at the counter, a booth or a table and chairs. While you are enjoying your meal you can stay current on the local news by reading on of the many copies of Voices newspaper or you could view the multitude of newspaper articles and photographs on the wall that Dorrie Sperry calls “the Hall of Fame.” The feeling of community is very strong throughout the Diner as employees chat with customers, including Dorrie Sperry, who commented that she “loves being part of my community.”
Dottie’s Diner At Phillips serves breakfast and lunch daily and dinners are served Tuesday through Friday. The dinner menu has choices ranging from salads and burgers to sesame crusted salmon. Dorrie Sperry is proud of Dottie’s Diner At Phillips because of the “good quality food and reasonable prices.”
For Dorrie Sperry, owning and operating Dottie’s Diner At Phillips was a natural progression in her 33 year career in the restaurant business. Dorrie Sperry not only beams when she tells you that she loves to cook and bake, but also when she speaks about people. She enjoys being with people in the restaurant as it allows her time to reconnect with people from the past as well as new customers. Dorrie Sperry also refers to many customers and all her employees as her extended family.
